Malawi President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, has issued a stern warning to senior ruling party and government officials soliciting donations in his name, saying once caught they will be prosecuted.

Dr Mutharika was speaking on Wednesday at the New State House in the administrative capital, Lilongwe.

In his address to members of the press, the State President who is also founder and leader for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said was concerned that some senior ruling party, government officials and others were stealing in his name.

“The most unfortunate part is that these senior DPP officials, some cabinet ministers and other government officials have been soliciting money from businessmen of Asian origin (Amwenye) alleging they have been sent by me,” he said.

The State President dismissed these officials seeking financial help in his name.

“These people are thieves because they are not sent by me,” he said.

The president disclosed that during the campaign period for the 2009 General Elections, some people were asking business personalities to donate towards the ruling DPP campaign.

“Now that the elections are over, they are going about lying that Bingu has sent us to collect money for the strengthening of DPP,” he said.

The State President labelled these officials as ‘thieves’ saying they can be prosecuted under Malawian Laws.

“They are breaking the law under the Penal Code and once caught, they can be prosecuted and I will be done with them,” he said.

The State President challenged all business personalities in Malawi to contact him personally once they receive anybody seeking financial help in his name.

“Do not give them the money and tell them you are going to call me. If they threaten to close your business, please tell me and I will be done with them for good,” he said.

The President challenged anybody soliciting money in his name that they are getting it wrong.

“If I need any help from any business person, I can call any business person myself, I don’t need to send anybody,” he said.

Recently there have been reports of people soliciting money in the name of State President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika.

Others have gone further falsifying potential employers that they are relatives to the State President in order to get favoured in employment-Malawi Digest.
