The introduction of fertilizer subsidy in Malawi’s agriculture sector has facilitated the nation’s economy boom, Malawi Digest has learnt.
This was disclosed by an official from the African Development Bank (ADB) Frank Black when he visited the country recently.
Black, commended the Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika -led government for the introduction of the fertilizer subsidy that turned Malawi into a leading country in Africa as a food secured nation.
The ADB official noticed that Malawi as an agro-based economy, it relies on maize and over the years under Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, it has shown that many people are able to feed themselves thereby helping to eradicate poverty in the process.
During the visit, Malawi Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Dr. Goodall Gondwe agreed with Black’s observation that Malawi has enough food to feed herself.
“As a country, we have enough food to feed ourselves and this food security leads into reduction of poverty levels hence boosting Malawi ’s economy,” said Gondwe.
Gondwe, himself a former employee of ADB applauded and thanked Malawi ’s Agriculture Minister, Ngwazi Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika for his initiatives in coming up with programmes that have improved the agricultural sector over the years.
Apart from foreign nations and organisations, Malawi ’s booming agricultural industry under Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, the Malawi National Assembly has also showered praises on the country’s administration in making the country food secure despite the hardships the leadership endured under the highly opposition dominated Parliament in the last 5 years.
Fertilizer subsidy was introduced by Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika targeting local poor farmers who cannot afford to buy fertilizers at the normal commercial prices of about MK10,000.00.
In the last growing season, a 50 kilogram bag of subsidized fertilizer was going at nine hundred Malawi kwacha (MK900.00) but that has since been reduced to five hundred Malawi kwacha (MK500.00).
This was a campaign pledge that was given by Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika prior to the May Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The accomplishment of this campaign promise has been hailed by many Malawians who have said Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika is a leader who keeps his promises.
Meanwhile, Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has appealed to farmers in Malawi to start preparing their farms for the next growing season coming up in under two months times.
“I am asking you all to start preparing your gardens for the next growing season as rains will be coming down very soon,” said Dr Mutharika recently when he addressed a public rally in the tea growing mountainous southern region district of Thyolo after officially opening a privately owned Teacher Training Centre-Malawi Digest.
