Malawi’s online propaganda tool for the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), the Nyasatimes have deliberately ignored the recent promotion of Dr Bruce Munthali to Chief Executive Officer for the Tobacco Control Commission in Malawi (TCC).
Following the resounding victory for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika in May this year, with funding from former president Bakili Muluzi, the Nyasatimes have been looking at all presidential appointments in Malawi not on their merits but basing on their regional and tribal lines.
The Nyasatimes has been deliberately ignoring facts that the people Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has been entrusting with important positions are actually rightly qualified and highly experienced in the fields they are assigned.
Unlike during the Bakili Muluzi 10 year rule, Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has tried to evenly spread all important positions in government ministries, departments and many other government funded organisations.
Recently, Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika appointed Dr Bruce Munthali as the Chief Executive Officer for one of the country’s most important organisations, the TCC.
Before his appointment into this position, Dr Munthali was entrusted with the job of looking after all members of staff working in all the state residences as Director General.
However, Nyasatimes has taken his appointment into this position as just one of those things bound to happen.
Also recently, Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika appointed former cabinet minister Davies Katsonga as chairperson for the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) but this was deliberately ignored by the Nyasatimes as just one of those things.
Whilst the Malawi Digest does not like to get itself involved in the analysing of presidential appointments basing on regional and tribal lines, we would like to remind the man behind the financing of Nyasatimes, Bakili Muluzi that the Bingu administration does not operate based on nepotism but rather on performance, qualification, experience and to cut the long story short based on merit.
Readers may wish to be reminded that during the Bakili Muluzi era, there was a time this country had Muluzi a man coming from Machinga as President, Joseph Chimbayo from Mangochi as Army Commander, Joseph Airon from Mangochi as Inspector General of Police, Alfred Upindi from Mangochi as Secretary in the Office of President and Cabinet, Lilian Patel from Mangochi as Minister of Foreign Affairs and her deputy was the late Dr Mekki Mtewa also from Mangochi.
As we write now, Bakili Muluzi has over 10 government assigned security guards which he was allowed to choose for his personal safety. The staff at Muluzi's BCA Hill including drivers are also from the above stated districts. Muluzi's official driver comes from Machinga, his home village.
All these guards come from Mangochi, Machinga and Balaka areas dominated by people from a particular tribe.
It is therefore most unfortunate for the Nyasatimes to be likening the Bingu style of leadership to that of Bakili Muluzi that was based on clear form of nepotism.
We expect the world to realise that people like Davies Katsonga, Dr Bruce Munthali and many others who do not come from the same tribe with the incumbent State President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika are being given positions not basing on the areas where they come from but because of their proper qualifications, experience and the capability to be able to do the job.
We congratulate Dr Bruce Munthali for being appointed Chief Executive Office for the Tobacco Control Commission although others have deliberately chosen to undermine this appointment-Malawi Digest.

How can Nyasa Times write about that? They are waiting for a Lhomwe to be appointed and you will hear from them. Cries of tribalism will come from Nyasa Times. That what happens when a former thug (do you remember who beat up Emmie Chanika at Comesa Hall?) is made to be the architect of an online newspaper.
ReplyDeleteThis is wise thinking. Great Malawi Digest
ReplyDeleteThe beating up of Emmie Chanika, I remember Thom Chiumia was the man behind. He is now in UK seeking asylum. Koman dzikoli abale, zinthu zimasintha. Mpaka kumalemba Nyasatimes news.
