Malawi has from Friday been a state of mourning following the death of 22 people in the northern region district of Rumphi, Malawi Digest understands.

Police authorities in the district confirmed to Malawi Digest that at least 22 lives have been lost after a bus they were travelling in from the northern city of Mzuzu to the lake side district of Karonga crushed near the Mchenga coal mine in Rumphi.

Rumphi Police officer-in-charge Ephraim Chipojola said preliminary findings have shown that the bus crushed as a result of loss of control following a break failure.

Chipojola said the bus registration number KA 2074 belongs to Karonga businessman a Mr Kumwenda and was making its journey in the evening of Thursday.

“The bus left Mzuzu for Karonga at around 6:00pm and when the bus reached this place near Mchenga coal mine around 9 pm the driver lost control allegedly for break failure and nosedived some 300 metres down the escarpment,” said the Police official.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Norah Chimwala told Malawi Digest a short while ago that Police are still trying to put pieces of information together over the cause of the accident.

“So far what we know is that 22 people died on site and their bodies are being kept at Rumphi District Hospital Mortuary and those injured but in critical condition have been referred to the Mzuzu Central Hospital,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Government has condoled with the bereaved families of those that have died in the road accident.

Malawi’s Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education Kingsley Namakhwa said in an interview with Malawi Digest from the commercial city, Blantyre that government is concerned over the loss of lives through road accidents in Malawi.

“The Malawi Government is saddened with the loss of 22 lives in this accident is Rumphi because the country has lost people who would have been productive in the development of this country,” he said.

The deputy government spokesperson had a word of advice to drivers who use vehicles especially public transport on the roads of Malawi.

“We appeal to people who have vehicle on the roads of especially those that offer public transport to make sure that they have road worthy vehicles and buses to avoid road accidents,” he said.

In recent weeks, Malawi has experienced numerous road accidents that have resulted in the loss of lives and leaving other people seriously injured-Malawi Digest.
