He has done it again. Malawi President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika is to be honoured with an international award by the United States based Foundation for Democracy in Africa, Malawi Digest understands.

According to a statement released by the organisation, Ngwazi Dr Mutharika is expected to receive the award when he visits the United States later this month.

According to the foundation, the presentation ceremony for the award will take place on September 18, 2009 in Miami, Florida during the AfrICANDO Trade and Investment Symposium.

The Foundation for Democracy in Africa says that President Ngwazi Dr Mutharika will receive the international recognition for democratic governance in Africa called the Medal of Glory award.

The Miami based foundation says that Ngwazi Dr Mutharika has been chosen for the award because of his economic reforms that have seen Malawi’s economic growth from 1 percent in 2003 to 9.7 percent in 2008.

The foundation says that Ngwazi Dr Mutharika is also being honoured for the good job that he did in Malawi during his first 5-year term of office where the country achieved a high rate of agricultural production and food security.

The statement says that in the 2005/2006 crop season, Malawi realised a food surplus of more than 500,000 metric tonnes and a year later in 2006/2007 planting season, the food surplus spiked to 1.3 million metric tonnes.

“Today Malawi has the capability of exporting food to other countries in southern Africa,” says the statement.

According to findings by the Malawi Digest, the Medal of Glory is the highest honour by the Foundation for Democracy in Africa presented to selected leaders who have dedicated their professional lives to the promotion of the enduring democratic principles of liberty, freedom and development in Africa.

Former recipients of the Medal of Glory include Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo and the founding President of The Seychelles Sir James Mencham.

This is one of the many international awards that Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has received since taking over power in 2004 from a literally collapsing economy that was led by former president and businessman Bakili Muluzi-Malawi Digest.
