After 25 years of absence at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, Malawi has today made it to Africa’s top football tournament to be held in Angola.

The Flames have booked their place in Angola out of their own hard work as well as some significant help from Ivory Coast.

The Ivorians humbled their West African neighbours, Guinea by 3 goals to nil denying them an outright chance to be in Angola 2010.

However, the Flames showed some zeal to be amongst the 16 top teams in Africa to be in Angola.

Although the Flames were this afternoon beaten by Burkina Faso 1-0 away in Ouagadougou, what matters more is that the Flames will be among the 16 top football nations that will battle it out in Angola next year.

In today’s match, Malawi conceded a goal in the first minute of the second half after a defensive error.

Malawi tried to come back into the match with some show of good football but the team was not just lucky to score.

In the same second half of the game, Malawi conceded a penalty after a Burkina Faso player was brought down in the penalty box.

However, South Africa based goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi saved Malawi from further trouble when he brilliantly saved the penalty.

Goal poacher, Chiukepo Msowoya who was in the starting line up was substituted in the second half for Esau Kanyenda, Jacob Ngwira paved way for Dave Banda, Russel Mwafulirwa giving space for Peter Wadabwa.

Meanwhile, there are wild celebrations in Malawi’s main urban centres including the cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu.

It has taken the Flames 25 years to appear again at Africa’s biggest soccer fiesta.

Malawi Digest and its entire management congratulate His Excellency the State President Ngwazi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, the national football team, the Flames and the entire Malawi nation for making it to Angola 2010.

We wish the Flames well as they appear at the 2010 CAN finals in January next year-Malawi Digest.
