TVM news presenter held on sex charges

By Emmanuel Sobilika

Police in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre on Wednesday night arrested Malawi Television (TVM) news presenter Oris Chimenya for allegedly defiling a 10 year old girl.

Chimenya was taken to Ndirande Police Station where he was being held as of Thursday evening.

Southern Region Police Headquarters deputy spokesperson Edna Ligowe told Malawi Digest on Thursday night that Chimenya, 31, of Mulemba Village, TA Machinjiri in Blantyre was picked by Police at his house on Wednesday at around 9pm.

“He is being held for allegedly defiling a minor,” she said.

The Police publicist said that investigations on Chimenya’s matter are at an advanced stage.

“He will appear in court very soon where he will be formally charged,” she said.

According to information gathered by Malawi Digest, the TVM news and sports presenter allegedly defiled a 10 year old girl of Mr and Mrs Mijoya family in the high density township of Ndirande in Blantyre.

Reports allege that Chimenya had been defiling the young girl on several occasions.

According to Law, we cannot name the girl at this stage as she is a minor.

Following the revelations of the alleged offence, the Mijoya family reported Chimenya to their church, Agape Family Church.

Both the Chimenya and the Mijoya families belong to the same denomination and were neighbours at Ndirande Newlines when the alleged offence took place.
Senior church clerks at Agape failed to conclude the issue after Chimenya vehemently denied that he defiled the said girl.

The church resolved that the issue be left in the hands of God in order to avoid bringing believer families and the image of the church into disrepute.

This did not please the Mijoya family who decided to report the issue to Police after Chimenya decided to change houses at the end of October.

Chimenya, a Polytechnic Journalism graduate joined Malawi Television about two years ago.

Before that, Chimeny worked as a sports reporter at one of Malawi’s leading dailies, The Nation.

Although these allegations have been levelled against Chimenya, he remains innocent until the court proves otherwise-Malawi Digest.
