Makande, Kamlepo to appear in court

By Emmanuel Sobilika

Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) deputy secretary general Hophmally Makande and Malawi Democratic Party (MDP) president Kamlepo Kalua will this Thursday appear before the Zomba Magistrate Court where the two will be charged formally.

It follows their arrest on Wednesday in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.

Both Makande and Kalua, handed themselves over to the Southern Region Police Headquarters Police on Wednesday after hearing there was a warrant of arrest issued against them.

Eastern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwe told Malawi Digest in Zomba that Makande has been arrested for proposing violence whilst Kalua has been arrested uttering seditious words.

He said investigations on the matter are over and that the two will appear in court today.

The alleged offences were committed at the UDF manifesto launch last Saturday in the lake side district of Mangochi.

Former president Bakili Muluzi attended the rally and although both Makande and Kamlepo spoke earlier than Muluzi, the former president did not condemn the sentiments uttered by the two opposition leaders – Malawi Digest.
